Self Realization Fellowship Headquarters

Posted on Nov 20th, 2008 by Sky High : World Citizen Sky High

Just got back from California where I checked out an interesting place in Pacific Palisades. It's the SRF headquarters that Paramahansa Yogananda set up in 1920 after coming to the United States from India.

Yogananda

I'd heard about Yogananda after reading an Autobiography of a Yogi back in 2000 when I was living in California. I had also met several folks there who were involved with the community.

Autobiography of a Yogi is an interesting read.  It's Yogananda's personal account of his life and search for truth which is chalk full of miracles and pseudoscientific claims the Atheist crowds would dismiss as absurd. I found myself challenged by all the accounts of Yogananda performing or bearing witness to miracles, the kind you usually only read about in the Bible or see in movies. But aside from the far fetched aspects of it, the heart of the story is in the right place which describes the author's attempt to unite East with West.

Some of the characters in the book are very memorable, especially Yogananda's master Sri Yukteswar who looks like the Gandalf of India. A matter of fact, I could totally see Autobiography of a Yogi being adapted into a major motion picture.

The SRF headquarters was a fascinating and beautiful place to visit. Unfortunately I couldn't get a picture of the main temple which had paintings in the front of Yogananda, Babaji, Sri Yukteswar, Gandhi, Krishna and Jesus Christ.

Some of Yogananda's most impressive work is his efforts of reconciling Western and Eastern religion. He wrote two huge volumes of commentary on the gospels and the Bhagavad Gita.

After finishing an internet search on Yogananda, I found some videos on YouTube which are the first moving images I've ever seen of him.

This is the shrine Yogananda built for Gandhi. His meeting with the Mahatma had a big impact on his life and he devotes an entire chapter to describing it in Autobiography of a Yogi.

Canvassing in Raymond and Bristol, New Hampshire

Raymond New Hampshire

Went canvassing in New Hampshire this weekend and had some interesting experiences. Overall, everyone in NH was very friendly including McCain supporters. There were however some notable exceptions.

I went canvassing in a retirement community in Bristol similar to a gated community with one entrance but no gate or signs reading "no trespassing" or "no canvassing." It was part of the route assigned to me and a friend. We probably knocked on over fifteen doors at this place and had a mixed bag of McCain and Obama supporters. One McCain supporter talked to us for about ten minutes and we ended in a respectful manner upon realizing that neither side was going to budge on our convictions.

We knocked on another house and then continued to our last address when we heard a voice from behind yelling, "Get out of here!" We turned around and there's this guy probably in his fifties or sixties storming towards us. He continues, "If you don't get out of here I'm going to call the cops."

My friend replies calmly, "We have a legal right to be here." The guy just continues warning us and threatening with a call to the police. At this point my friend replies, "Fine, go ahead and call the cops because we're not leaving."

Once this fellow realized we couldn't be intimidated, his real issue came out in the open. "You ni**er lovers better get out of here."

My friend and I were appalled; this is 2008 New Hampshire, not 1950 Alabama. We went on our way and this guy went on his without further incident but it definitely gave us pause and made me want to write about it in my blog. Although we've come far as a nation and are so close to electing a person of color president, we can't forget that there is much more to be done such as exposing this kind of racism for what it is; an attempt to cling to the past and avoid embracing our destiny.

Barack Obama is more than just a presidential candidate. He is a symbol of America's future. I was living in California in the year 2000, the year when white people in the state no longer held a majority. California is now a melting pot with 50% whites and the rest a mixture of Asians, Hispanics, African Americans and countless others. Like California, Barack is a window into our world's future with a destiny of dark and light, yin and yang united.

After the incident, my friend came up with of a good comeback he wished he had thought of in time for this guy's tirade. "If you kick us out, you'll have to kick out half your residents who are also ni**er lovers." For those people who are racist and believe a vote for Barack is a betrayal of the white race, what about the white side of Barack? Everywhere he goes he is seen as a "black man" as if we should ignore the fact that he is also half Anglo European and has a family tree connected to George Bush and Dick Cheney.

I hope that white Americans will see themselves in Barack Obama just as much as black Americans do. Unless we see both Yin and Yang, black and white, as two sides of the same coin that makes America great, we will never reach our potential destiny as a nation and example to the world about what is truly possible when humanity sets aside their external differences for what unites us on the inside. Only then can we catch a glimpse into what is on the horizon for our species when both sides of the duality come together and form a more perfect union.

Resurrection / Reincarnation

Posted on Oct 11th, 2008 by Sky High : World Citizen Sky High
Just created this new brochure to examine the divide between eastern and western world views regarding the afterlife. I tried to answer the question; "can they be reconciled?"

A Message From The President

Posted on Sep 11th, 2008 by Sky High : World Citizen Sky High
I'm still trying to shake the premonition of world war ahead and chaos in the near future. This brochure acknowledges this potential while calling for a better ending/beginning. Hopefully we can all change course before it's too late.

It might seem a bit silly to some,
but it gets the big idea across which is my main objective.

Sophia Alexandria

The president's first name means wisdom. It's what we'll all need to reach the next stage in humanity's evolution. The last name Alexandria references the past as something we shouldn't forget for the sake of our future. Alexandria Egypt was once the most modern city in the world, containing collective treasures of knowledge that were destroyed and had to be rediscovered a thousand years later after a long detour through an unnecessary dark age.
